The Kappa Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated had their annual Man of the Year Scholarship Pageant. Their theme: Grease! The show started promptly at 5:08 with a delightful video, setting in a 1950 restaurant. Here, the chapter introduced their court in a fun, creative way. They then proceeded with the program engaging in the opening dance. This is designed to introduce the audience to the participants in the court as well as their sponsors. The A-List group of participants along with their sponsors, jumped, slid, turned and danced around the stage entertaining the audience before them. It was choreographed very well ignoring some slight hiccups, but overall the men of the court did their thang, along with their beautiful sponsors. They ended the dance with a soul train line, followed by the introduction of the host and hostess.

This year’s host and hostess of the Man of the Year pageant were Mr. 1908, 2013 Jamal Stewart and Miss UNC Charlotte 2013 Ashely Kelly. The two looked emaculant in their attire and displayed complete professionalism while hosting the event. Granted there were some times when the audience could tell the lack of chemistry between the two commentators, but in general they were definitely the perfect team for the job.

Now to introduce you to the 2014-2015 Man of the Year Court! Contestant number one is a member of the Sophomore class, a business economic major and a very handsome man, Mr. Tyquan Pugh. Contestant number two is a Junior, business marketing major and sweet on the eye, Mr. Shakeel A. Johnson. Contestant number three is a Junior, Business major and passionate about being in the MOY court, Mr. Merrit Blanks. Contestant number four is a sophomore, Business management major and known all around campus, Mr. Naim Cooper. The fifth contestant was Mr. Joshua Clark, a Senior, Business Economics major with the voice of an angel. Contestant number six was Mohamed Awo a sophomore, Accounting major who let everyone know that the phrase “I feel you” is getting really old and futile. Contestant number seven was representing for the Infinity Modeling Troupe, Sophomore and Business major Mr. Deandre Collins. Lastly but certainly not least, contestant number eight was holding it down for Ghana, displaying his taut, athletic, well defined body every chance he got, Mr. Enoch Quao. Each contestant had a Chapter Sponsor, Andrina Akins, Brittney White, Juliana Perez, Aviance Brown, Decoya Blue, Jasmine Terry, Diamond Ross and Krishana Jackson, respectively.

The judges tonight were Howard Simms, Keshia Williams, Thanh Le, Monique Elmore and Dr. Michele Aikens who each had a difficult decision to make.

The pageant had 4 major categories, lifestyle and fitness, casual; talent and evening wear which was accompanied by an onstage question. In my opinion, each participant had their strengths and weaknesses. For lifestyle and fitness, Johnson and Quao dominated the stage. Johnson depicted himself as a golfer while Quao engaged every female’s attention with the colorful flag of Ghana, but more importantly the well-toned physique under it. In the casual category, Blanks and Clark were fashionably appealing to me. Blanks exhibiting some studious attire, making him look like a sophisticated scholar. While Clark, took us to a more urban setting, rocking an Outcast sweatshirt and two chains. Reminding us that black men can have that urban swag but still have a gentleman like presence. The most incredible part of the event was the talent competition. Cooper and Awo engaged every person with their outstanding talents. Cooper did a self-written powerful monologue called Tin Man of Generation. It displayed the faults in our society and how no one is man enough to speak out about it and how we are all like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, having no heart nor passion to speak out. Cooper’s tone and enthusiasm gained him a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd. Awo took a more psychological and philosophical approach for the talent he performed. He proposed a reason for why people say “I feel you”. He deeply explored the explanation of this phrase and then urged us to stop using it, because everyone’s story is different, even if only by a minute detail. The last competition was evening wear and on-stage question. Pugh and Collins were the winners of this competition in my opinion. Pugh’s answer to his question was articulate and intelligent. He was cool, calm, collected and answered his question to the best of his ability. Collins was looking very elegant in his attire for the evening wear competition. His smooth, aristocratic demeanor putting him in the lead for the ladies attention in this section. Bravo Infinity, you’ve taught him well.

There was some amazing entertainment in the building tonight! Jasmine Bunn and Co. Dance Team lit up the stage with some hot moves to Jessie J’s song “Bang Bang”. They were synchronized, engaging, sexy and sassy. I enjoyed their performance very much. The real talk of the pageant though was 2013-2014 Man of the Year Eric Dill’s performance entitled “My Love Story”. I interviewed Dill later for him to shed some more detailed light on his experience with love. Dill’s performance was creative, amusing, entertaining and powerful. Dill has a wonderful voice and a way of relating to his audience. Keep looking Dill; I’m sure your Ms. Right is somewhere.

After the intermission, the judges returned with the results and the host and hostesses called the court back to the stage. With hearts pounding and stomachs turning, they lined up in weight of their fate. Tonight’s winners were Enoch Quao for Mr. Scholarship, Joshua Clark for Mr. Congeniality, Deandre Collins for Mr. 1976, Naim Cooper for Mr. 1908 and Your Kappa Kappa Chapter 2014-2015 Man of the Year is Merrit Blanks!

Congratulations to all of the winners tonight and to the rest of the court. I believe this was an experience for you guys that you will never forget. Keep making the UNCC community proud.
