It seems that within the male dominated rap industry the glorification of promiscuous women has become a norm. Rhymes are commonly filled with derogatory terms toward women and sexual references. It seems female rapper Nicki Minaj has decided to counteract the norms of hip hop culture with her latest single ‘Anaconda’. She glorifies her body and her right to own her sexuality with the help of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” sample. Minaj spits lyrics like “he don’t like ‘em boney he likes something he can grab” meant to tie into the theme of the song, thick women do it better. Throughout the song Minaj also talks about her sex life with ease and pride. “I wanted to say, ‘Hey ladies, you’re beautiful,’” Minaj said in an interview with ABC News “Hopefully, this changes things and maybe it won’t change things, but I love it.” It isn’t clear whether girls referencing Nicki Minaj’s body will make them feel more beautiful about theirs, but Nicki Minaj has made one thing clear. She has established that women can be independent and braggadocios regarding their relationships and proud regarding their bodies no matter what shape or size. In the end, this is what the song ‘Anaconda’ promotes.
