In other music news Chris Brown recently released his sixth studio album, X. The full length deluxe edition album is longer than most, with a total of 21 tracks and 75 minutes worth of runtime, it allows you to hear Brown make attempts to move on from his tainted past and bad reputation. The album opens with album titled single “X” where he shouts “I swear to God I’m moving on.” But even with 21 songs Brown still seems to come up short with half of the album sounding lackluster and the other presenting what could be some of the best songs of the year. With songs like “New Flame,” “Drunk Texting” and “Drown In It” X seems promising but falls off with songs like “Add Me In,” “See You Around?” and “Don’t Be Gone Too Long” where its clear to see Browns’ uninspired lyrics paired with commercially popular styles that just don’t fit in right. X, is an urban Pop album that can be seen as a great release but can also be viewed as Brown falling short while trying to appeal to many aspects of the music spectrum. While sale wise the album did well in its debut week, landing at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 145,000 copies sold, many acclaimed critics still have mixed reviews. Many say that the problem lies where Brown has tried to cover so many styles within one album and has lost himself in the process. Personally as a whole the album is a good listen, while some songs I cannot wait to skip, others I enjoy listening to. As far as the complete sound of the album and how well Brown executed it, I would give the album a 7/10. Sonically the album is good but Brown’s not so clever lyricism and unmatched styles of the album and how well Brown executed it, I would give the album a 7/10. Sonically the album is good but Brown’s not so clever lyricism and unmatched styles take away from the album as a whole.
